  • Who should do pilates?
    Pilates is for everyone, from young to old, sedentary to athletic, male and female. It's for people who are strong or weak, flexible or inflexible. It is also suitable for those seeking rehabilitation from injuries or joint problems and is frequently recommended by GPs, physical therapists & osteopaths. Pilates is used as a complete fitness programme as well as a supplement to other methods of fitness. It is an exercise regime that will educate the body to improve your posture and help you move in a more efficient way. Pilates is for those who want to look and feel better. It is for those who strive to function at an optimal level, pain-free. Pilates is for those who seek balance in life, wanting to change their lives for the better by enhancing the mind while strengthening the body. Pilates is for anyone and everyone!
  • What are pilates mat classes?
    Pilates mat classes centre around the floor work developed by Joseph Pilates, and range from beginner to advanced exercises. Using the body’s own resistance, a series of movements are performed designed to improve circulation, breathing, posture, and body awareness. My mat classes incorporate small equipment such as bands, stability balls, magic circles and hand weights (all optional). At the end of the session (or the beginning for the gentle pilates classes) we practice relaxation for both mind and body. This can be helpful if you suffer with anxiety or stress.
  • What should I wear to class?
    We practice pilates and BarreConcept with barefeet or socks. Socks with grips are very practical. Ballet shoes can also be worn for BarreConcept classes but are not necessary. Please wear comfortable clothes that are not too tight or restrictive (layers are important so you don't get too hot or too cold). Most people wear sports clothing but leggings are fine for pilates and barre. For HIIT and cardio sports clothing is best, a supportive sports bra (females) and a good pair of trainers. Bring another layer to wear during the cool down at the end.
  • What equipment do I need to bring to class?
    I provide mats, weights, balls, bands etc at the in person class to begin with but I ask you to purchase your own equipment once you feel committed to attending a class. You will also need a small cushion or towel to support your head whilst lying down. Bring some water with you too. With regards to the online class you will find the equipment requirements in the class description.
  • Are all classes for women only?
    No, all classes are suitable for both men and women.
  • Where are the in-person group classes held?
    I currently work at 4 different venues. Monday and Wednesday evenings at Burnham Methodist Church Hall, Eastfield Road (opposite the Esso Garage). Tuesday morning at Burnham Park Hall. Thursday morning at Taplow WI Hall. Monday morning for barre and Friday morning for pilates advanced and improver level at Farnham Common Sports Club. All venues have free parking.
  • Do I need to be a member of Farnham Common Sports Club to join the classes you hold there?
    No you don’t have to be a member for the exercise classes I hold at the Club.
  • How do I join a Zoom Class?
    When you sign up you will be sent a link. Please log in 5 minutes before the class begins. It would be helpful for me to be able to see you during class and it helps us to connect as a group. If you would like me to see you, please switch your video on. If you prefer to join the class without video connection it is also fine to leave your video off. I will mute you during the class but please unmute yourself at the end if you have any questions or if you wish to speak to fellow students or just to say goodbye!
  • Do you teach beginners?
    I would recommend joining the gentle beginners class on a Monday at 5.30pm, Burnham Methodist Church Hall or you could register for an online zoom beginners class. If enough people register for this it will be held on a weekly basis. I would also recommend the Friday 10.0am pilates class for beginners as this class is geared to all different levels including beginners and people with injuries.
  • What equipment would you recommend?
    I can provide you with the details of equipment I have tried and tested over the years. Please ask me for the details.
  • How often should I exercise per week?
    I would recommend attending at least 2 classes a week. If you are a beginner you might wish to stick to one class initially until you build strength and confidence. With any form of exercise, CONSISTENCY is the key. Attending a weekly class is important to get the technique right and the more you practice at home the more you will see the benefits. Pilates becomes a way of life just like brushing your teeth or washing your hair, once you experience the benefits you cannot live without it.
  • Which class would you recommend for losing weight?
    The cardio or HIIT options are the best classes to help you burn fat.
  • Is pilates good for your back?
    Yes it is because pilates improves core strength, teaches good alignment and we practice gentle stretches to help relieve tight muscles.
