What is Sivananda Yoga?

The Sivananda training system aims to retain the vitality of the body and decrease chance of disease, by simply and naturally cultivating the body.  The Sivananda practice establishes physiological balance in the body and secures mental poise through its scientifically-designed series of asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (yogic breathing techniques).

The word “yoga” means “union”. Yoga is a form of exercise based on the belief that the body and breath are intimately connected with the mind. By controlling the breath and holding the body in steady poses or “asanas”, yoga creates harmony.  Yoga practice consists of five key elements: proper breathing, proper exercise, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking and meditation. The exercises, or asanas, are designed to ease tense muscles, to tone up the internal organs, and to improve the flexibility of the body’s joints and ligaments.

Sivananda Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga, based on the wisdom of Swami Sivananda. Developed with the stressed and hectic western world in mind, Sivananda Yoga focuses on your health and well-being in a way that fits into your lifestyle. Rather than working up a sweat, this type of yoga is all about relaxation and pranayama, deep yogic breathing exercises. A great stress-buster, Sivananda Yoga and its elements of meditation can relax and focus your mind, while improving your flexibility and strength. By naturally developing your body, Sivananda Yoga has even been linked to slowing down the ageing process and reducing illness.  Perfect for unwinding at the end of a busy day, Sivananda Yoga is all about keeping calm from the inside out.

Yoga is a holistic exercise that can benefit anyone, and so all ages and fitness levels are welcome. The emphasis on deep breathing is particularly good for asthmatics and individuals with anxiety issues, and sending oxygen into the muscles can help to make you stronger and more energetic.  Sivananda Yoga is also brilliant for high stress levels, as it will help calm you down and wash away your worries by keeping your mind and body focused on relaxing.

Yoga is a fantastic exercise for your internal organs- the twists and bends in the various poses ensure a good blood supply and massage to all of your important body parts promoting detoxification. The exercise on the joints also makes it a great remedy for arthritis sufferers, and its calming qualities can lower blood pressure too.
